Doctoral Student in Techno-economic Optimization of Thermal Energy Storage
Develop advanced modelling and optimization frameworks for thermal energy storage in industrial heating applications.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with strong backgrounds in thermodynamics, optimization methods, and computational programming.
Overview
This doctoral position focuses on addressing the challenge of industrial process heat decarbonization through thermal energy storage (TES). Based at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the project involves creating a modular techno-economic modelling and optimization framework to evaluate various TES concepts such as phase-change materials, molten salts, and particle storage. The researcher will investigate system sizing, integration with renewable energy sources, and operational strategies across multiple European industrial scenarios. The successful candidate is expected to conduct rigorous computational modelling, collaborate with ongoing industrial projects, and publish findings in leading academic venues.
What you'll do
- Develop a modular techno-economic modelling and optimization framework for various thermal energy storage concepts.
- Perform quasi-steady-state annual optimizations and targeted dynamic modelling of storage systems.
- Integrate renewable heat sources and electrification options into system performance models.
- Benchmark TES technologies against alternative industrial heat-supply options across European market conditions.
- Collaborate with ongoing industrial projects and utilize experimental data for model validation.
- Produce technology-selection maps and practical design guidelines for industrial deployment.
