PhD in Advanced Epitaxial Growth for InP-Based Photonic Integrated Circuits
Investigate advanced epitaxial growth and manufacturing yield of InP-based photonic integrated circuits using state-of-the-art MOCVD technology.
Best for:Best for materials scientists or applied physicists with a strong background in semiconductor physics and epitaxial growth processes.
Overview
Eindhoven University of Technology offers a four-year fully-funded PhD position focusing on the epitaxial growth of functional materials for Indium Phosphide (InP) photonic integrated circuits. Working within the Photonic Integration Group and utilizing a next-generation Aixtron MOCVD reactor, the researcher will explore fundamental growth limits, optimize material uniformity, and analyze failure mechanisms to improve manufacturing yield. The candidate will combine rigorous materials science experiments with predictive data modeling in close collaboration with industrial foundry partners. Teaching duties will account for 10% to 15% of the annual working time.
What you'll do
- Explore the fundamental limits of epitaxial growth for InP-based compounds such as InGaAsP and InAlGaAs using an advanced Aixtron reactor.
- Correlate material uniformity and epitaxial parameters directly with the electro-optical performance of active optical components like lasers and amplifiers.
- Analyze large manufacturing datasets to identify defect sources, understand device failure mechanisms, and improve long-term reliability.
- Develop predictive models connecting the physical and chemical principles of MOVPE to successful industrial-scale PIC fabrication.
- Collaborate closely with commercial foundry partners to validate simulation models using real-world fabrication data.
- Contribute to departmental teaching activities for up to 10% to 15% of the contract time.
