PhD Position in Bio-Based Battery Electrolytes
Develop sustainable bio-based electrolytes for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries to reduce climate impact and strategic material dependence.
Best for:Best for chemistry, physics, or materials science graduates with hands-on experimental lab experience and a passion for sustainable energy solutions.
Overview
This PhD position at Uppsala University’s Department of Chemistry focuses on advancing sustainable battery technology by designing bio-based electrolytes derived from renewable carbon sources. The project aims to reduce environmental impact, enhance safety, and decrease reliance on fossil-based materials. The successful candidate will conduct experimental research, including electrolyte synthesis, battery assembly, and advanced characterization techniques such as electrochemical testing and spectroscopy. Collaboration with the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre will provide a multidisciplinary environment combining fundamental and applied research. The role involves up to 20% teaching and participation in third-cycle courses, with an expectation to publish high-impact research and present findings at national and international conferences.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research to develop bio-based electrolytes for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries using renewable carbon sources.
- Perform liquid electrolyte development, battery assembly, and advanced electrochemical characterization (e.g., galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy).
- Utilize advanced characterization methods such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy.
- Collaborate with the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre to integrate research findings into broader sustainable battery technology initiatives.
- Publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Engage in up to 20% teaching duties and participate in third-cycle courses related to research topics.
Requirements
Degree required: A second-cycle degree (Master’s) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a closely related subject, or completion of at least 240 credits in higher education with 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits.
