Doctoral Student in Automatic Control with focus on Datacenter Control
Join an EU-funded MSCA network at Lund University to pioneer AI and control architectures for sustainable datacentres.
Best for:Best for engineers with a strong background in automatic control, machine learning, and optimization seeking an international PhD experience in sustainable computing.
Overview
Lund University invites applications for a 4-year fully funded doctoral position within the Department of Automatic Control, focusing on adaptive grid-interactive edge datacenter fleets. The successful candidate will design innovative control layers and telemetry systems that bridge high-level energy intents with low-level thermal and compute hardware actions. Operating within the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) network AEGIS, the role involves collaborative secondments at EPFL and Elisa. The researcher will engage in cutting-edge research, complete postgraduate coursework, and contribute up to 20% to departmental teaching and duties.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research within the AEGIS project, authoring publications and presenting findings at international conferences.
- Design intent languages and control strategies to manage carbon, flexibility, and operational costs in datacentres.
- Develop online tuning models for power-performance and thermal dynamics using classical control and machine learning.
- Build practical control software and telemetry systems that translate high-level intents into physical commands while respecting service-level limits.
- Complete 90 ECTS credits of postgraduate courses locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Participate in departmental duties and teaching activities, including laboratory supervision and exam management, up to 20% of the position.
