Master of Science in Biotechnology
Interdisciplinary engineering degree bridging fundamental science and industrial/medical biotechnology applications.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with a strong foundation in biotechnology or related fields seeking to specialise in industrial, medical, or systems biotechnology with hands-on research and industry exposure.
Overview
The Master of Science in Biotechnology at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is an engineering-focused programme that integrates scientific principles with technical applications. It prepares students for careers in bioprocessing, medical biotechnology, and sustainable bioproduct development, addressing transitions from petroleum-based industries to bioeconomy solutions. The curriculum combines specialised modules, a mandatory industrial internship, and a research-based thesis, with flexibility to tailor studies through elective courses. Students engage in international projects and have opportunities to study or intern abroad, fostering global perspectives in biotechnology innovation.
What you'll do
- Complete a structured curriculum combining specialised modules in bioprocess engineering, medical biotechnology, and bioseparation techniques.
- Conduct a 12-week industrial internship to gain practical experience in biotechnology applications.
- Write and defend a six-month Master’s thesis based on original research, with flexibility to choose between English or German.
- Participate in international projects, guest lectures, and optional study-abroad units to broaden global perspectives.
- Engage in elective modules covering topics like immune biotechnology, pharmaceutical technology, and food technology.
- Develop and refine technical and research skills through hands-on laboratory work and project-based learning.
