PhD Position in Multimodal Imaging for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Join the PANDORA doctoral network to advance multimodal imaging and drug optimization for age-related macular degeneration.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in biomedical engineering, neurosciences, or related fields with a strong background in biophotonics, microscopy, or image processing.
Overview
The Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH) is offering a PhD candidate position within the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network PANDORA. Based at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) in Heraklion, Greece, the project focuses on defining molecular biomarkers of complement-mediated age-related macular degeneration using advanced multimodal microscopy. The selected candidate will develop detection protocols for retinal degeneration models, analyze quantitative imaging datasets, and evaluate novel therapeutic responses. The role involves close collaboration with European partner institutions, including research secondments and network training events.
What you'll do
- Develop and optimize protocols and detailed guidelines for multimodal imaging procedures in retinal explants and retinal organoids.
- Develop and maintain a database of age-related macular degeneration-related biomarkers visualizable via multimodality microscopy.
- Perform imaging of retinal tissue using novel hybrid microscopic systems combining optoacoustic, two-photon, second harmonic generation, and Raman techniques.
- Perform quantitative image processing, analysis, and interpretation of complex multimodal datasets.
- Correlate imaging biomarkers with multiomics data, therapeutic delivery outcomes, and biological responses.
- Contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, network training events, and collaborative research secondments.
