Postdoctoral Scholar in Ice Sheet-Earth System Modeling
Investigate cryosphere-ocean feedbacks in global climate dynamics using advanced Earth System models at UC Irvine.
Best for:Best for computational modelers and physical oceanographers with strong programming expertise and an interest in cryosphere-ocean interactions.
Overview
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position focused on ice sheet-Earth system modeling. Working with Professor Henri Drake on an NSF-funded project, the successful candidate will investigate two-way feedbacks between the cryosphere and the ocean within global climate dynamics. The appointee will develop, run, and analyze fully-coupled experiments using novel configurations of CESM3 and CISM3. Ideal candidates will possess strong computational modeling skills, a background in physical oceanography, glaciology, or a related field, and an enthusiasm for collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
What you'll do
- Develop, run, and analyze fully-coupled experiments using novel configurations of CESM3 and CISM3 with dynamic representations of ice sheets.
- Evaluate and calibrate newly implemented parameterizations for basal melt and calving.
- Develop and apply process-based diagnostics to evaluate simulation fidelity using remote sensing and in-situ observations.
- Execute mechanism denial experiments to isolate the specific roles of coupled feedbacks.
- Collaborate closely with model developers at NSF NCAR and contribute to a vibrant research group culture.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students on related research projects.
- Disseminate research outcomes through conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal publications.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Physical Oceanography, Glaciology, or related field
Language: English; professional working proficiency
Instruction: English
Publications: Dissemination of results through journal publications is expected during the tenure.
- Experience modifying, running, and analyzing ocean, ice sheet, or Earth System models
- Expert programming proficiency in Python, Matlab, Julia, Fortran, or C++
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated detail orientation with strong organizational and communication abilities
- Must hold or be about to complete a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline at the time of appointment
