PhD Researcher in Semi-Automatic Locomotion Techniques for Immersive Navigation
Develop and evaluate novel locomotion methods to enhance spatial orientation and reduce cybersickness in immersive 3D environments.
Best for:Best for computer science or HCI graduates with strong software development skills, experience in Unity/Unreal, and a passion for human-computer interaction and immersive systems.
Overview
This PhD position at Inria’s Saclay Centre focuses on designing and assessing semi-automatic locomotion techniques for interactive navigation in immersive virtual environments. The project addresses critical usability challenges, particularly cybersickness, by exploring transitions between first-person (ego-centric) and third-person (exo-centric) viewpoints. The successful candidate will conduct state-of-the-art reviews, prototype navigation systems using Unity/Unreal/WebXR, and conduct user evaluations to balance spatial awareness and comfort. The work aligns with Inria’s Digital Twins for Territories initiative, collaborating with academic and industrial partners to advance immersive interaction technologies.
What you'll do
- Conduct a comprehensive review of existing locomotion techniques in immersive environments, focusing on cybersickness and spatial orientation challenges.
- Design and structure a conceptual framework for navigating between ego-centric and exo-centric viewpoints in 3D spaces.
- Develop prototypes of navigation techniques using Unity, Unreal Engine, or WebXR platforms.
- Design and implement evaluation methodologies to assess user experience, spatial awareness, and cybersickness symptoms.
- Conduct user studies to validate the effectiveness and usability of the proposed techniques.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed conferences and journals within the HCI and immersive systems communities.
