Overview

This postdoctoral position at City, University of London’s Cardiovascular Research Institute focuses on characterising and validating novel genes linked to Brugada syndrome—a leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people—using zebrafish as a disease model. The project, funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences and British Heart Foundation, involves designing CRISPR-mediated gene knockdowns, functional analyses, and protocol optimisation. The role is ideal for researchers with expertise in molecular biology, gene editing, and zebrafish husbandry, offering autonomy in experimental design and data interpretation. The 18-month fixed-term position is based in London and requires limited supervision, making it suitable for independent yet collaborative postdocs.

What you'll do

  • Design and execute CRISPR-mediated gene knockdowns of zebrafish orthologues for novel Brugada syndrome genes.
  • Conduct functional analyses to assess the impact of gene knockdowns on heart function and arrhythmia phenotypes.
  • Develop and optimise new experimental techniques and protocols critical to the project.
  • Provide technical expertise and troubleshoot experiments independently with limited supervision.
  • Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and presentation of research findings.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance understanding of genetic mechanisms in cardiac diseases.
