Multiphysics Modeling and Control of Torsional Oscillations in Powertrains
A PhD position focusing on multiphysics modeling, state observation, and control of torsional oscillations in electrified heavy vehicle powertrains.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with a background in control systems, electrical engineering, or mechanics and an interest in experimental multiphysics modeling.
Overview
This doctoral position at the Mechanics of Contacts and Structures Laboratory (LaMCoS) within INSA Lyon investigates the complex interactions in heavy vehicle electrified powertrains. The research addresses torque oscillations and resonances generated by electric motors and gear meshing, which pose challenges for control strategies and predictive maintenance. The successful candidate will develop coupled multidisciplinary models spanning control systems, electrical engineering, and mechanics. The work includes an experimental component to validate novel state observation and control techniques for early failure detection.
What you'll do
- Develop coupled multiphysics models integrating control systems, electric machines, and mechanical transmissions
- Design advanced state observation and control strategies to mitigate nonlinear torque oscillations and resonances
- Implement experimental setups to analyze transmission vibrations and validate theoretical models
- Investigate new failure modes in innovative transmission architectures for predictive maintenance applications
- Collaborate with industrial partners and document research findings through reports and academic publications
