PhD Positions in Silicon-Carbide Quantum Networks
Join TU Delft’s Taminiau Lab to advance quantum networks using spin defects in silicon carbide for scalable quantum computing and communication.
Best for:Best for recent MSc graduates in physics, quantum technologies, or materials science with a strong interest in quantum networks, nanophotonics, and experimental quantum physics.
Overview
This PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) focuses on developing silicon-carbide (SiC) quantum networks. As part of the Taminiau Lab, you will collaborate on designing and fabricating nanophotonic SiC devices while conducting quantum optics experiments. The goal is to create scalable quantum networks for distributed quantum computation, simulations, and communication. The position is based at QuTech, a leading research hub for quantum technologies, and offers a collaborative, international environment with strong emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork and innovation. Ideal candidates should be passionate about quantum technologies and nano-fabrication, though prior experience is not strictly required.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate nanophotonic silicon-carbide (SiC) devices for quantum networks.
- Conduct quantum optics experiments to demonstrate scalable quantum networks for distributed quantum computation and communication.
- Investigate high-fidelity spin-qubit control and fast optical entanglement links in SiC-based systems.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to develop and test quantum devices.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in the TU Delft Graduate School’s Doctoral Education Programme to develop academic and professional skills.
Requirements
Degree required: Master of Science (MSc) in physics, quantum technologies, materials science, or a related field
Degree offered: PhD
Language: English proficiency at a level sufficient for academic communication, scientific writing, and participation in English-taught courses (e.g., IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).
Instruction: English
- Motivation and commitment to research on nano-fabrication and characterization of quantum devices.
- Basic understanding of quantum physics principles (e.g., spin defects, quantum optics).
- Familiarity with experimental techniques in physics or materials science (preferred but not mandatory).
- No specific nationality or residency restrictions mentioned.
- No age or prior experience caps beyond holding an MSc degree.
