PhD Student Position in Numerical Modeling and Design of Plasmonic Crystals
Join an SNSF-funded project at EPFL modeling nanostructured plasmonic crystals for advanced solar energy applications.
Best for:Best for quantitative graduates in physics or materials science with strong background in FDTD simulations, optics, and plasmonics.
Overview
The École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) invites applications for a PhD student position within the Nanotechnology for Solar Energy Conversion group, led by Prof. Andreas Schüler. Supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project “Coupled oscillations in plasmonic crystals,” the successful candidate will focus on numerical modeling and the optical characterization of metallic micro- and nanostructures. The project aims to achieve plasmonic crystals featuring broad frequency bands of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) for solar energy harvesting and smart building integration. Candidates will conduct simulations, execute experiments, and collaborate internationally while contributing to teaching and supervising Master's students.
What you'll do
- Assume full responsibility for executing the PhD research dissertation and project objectives
- Perform numerical modeling and computer simulations using Finite Differences in the Time Domain (FDTD) methods
- Design, fabricate, and execute optical experiments and characterizations of micro- and nanostructures
- Analyze, interpret, and process experimental results obtained from spectrophotometry and ellipsometry
- Write scientific research articles for publication in peer-reviewed international journals
- Present research findings at international academic conferences and scientific meetings
- Contribute to departmental teaching activities, coach Master's students, and provide basic administrative support
