PhD Researcher in Fault-Tolerant Quantum Graphical Reasoning
Develop novel graphical reasoning techniques for fault-tolerant quantum computing at Inria’s Mocqua team.
Best for:Best for theoretical computer scientists with a strong background in formal methods, algebraic theories, or computational logic, eager to apply their skills to quantum computing challenges.
Overview
This PhD position at Inria’s Mocqua team (University of Lorraine) focuses on advancing fault-tolerant quantum computing through graphical reasoning methods. The candidate will contribute to extending existing quantum circuit transformation theories—such as ZX-calculus—to support error-correction frameworks. The work bridges theoretical computer science and quantum information, with potential collaborations with industrial partners. The project leverages Inria’s expertise in quantum software and hardware, aiming to enable scalable, reliable quantum computation. Strong theoretical computer science skills are required, though prior quantum physics knowledge is not mandatory.
What you'll do
- Develop and extend graphical reasoning techniques (e.g., ZX-calculus) to support fault-tolerant quantum computation.
- Investigate how existing quantum circuit transformation theories can be adapted for error-correction purposes.
- Collaborate with the Mocqua team to integrate findings into quantum software tools and frameworks.
- Publish research results in top-tier conferences and journals within theoretical computer science and quantum computing.
- Engage in knowledge exchange with industrial partners to apply research outcomes in real-world quantum hardware contexts.
- Present research progress at internal and external seminars, workshops, and conferences.
