Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Environmental Fluid Mechanics
Join a leading research cluster to advance sustainable dredging strategies through experimental fluid mechanics and sediment transport studies.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with a PhD in environmental fluid mechanics, coastal hydrodynamics, or sediment transport, and hands-on experience in physical modelling and data analysis using MATLAB/Python.
Overview
This postdoctoral position at the University of Dundee focuses on improving environmental practices in suction dredging and sediment disposal through experimental fluid mechanics. The successful candidate will collaborate with industry partners to design and conduct scaled physical modelling experiments, analyse sediment-laden plume dynamics, and develop data-driven parameterisations to minimise ecological impact. The role involves interdisciplinary research, publication of findings, and participation in collaborative projects with Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) and Statens vegvesen. Ideal for researchers with expertise in environmental fluid mechanics, coastal hydrodynamics, and experimental sediment transport.
What you'll do
- Collate and analyse existing datasets on suction dredging and sediment-laden plume dynamics to inform experimental design.
- Design and execute scaled physical modelling experiments aligned with project objectives to study sediment deposition footprints and slurry discharge impacts.
- Process and analyse experimental data using MATLAB/Python to develop improved parameterisations for sediment behaviour and optimise slurry dumping strategies.
- Assist in collaborative research activities, including steering group meetings and knowledge exchange with industry partners (NPRA/Statens vegvesen).
- Contribute to high-profile publications, conference presentations, and technical reports to disseminate research findings.
- Participate in outreach events, institutional seminars, and research funding opportunities to expand the research cluster’s portfolio.
- Actively engage in dissemination activities, including presentations, workshops, and networking events.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD (or equivalent) in environmental fluid mechanics, coastal/marine hydrodynamics, or sediment transport dynamics; candidates writing up their PhD are also eligible.
Language: English; proficiency required for academic communication and collaboration.
Instruction: English
Publications: Developing track record of publishing in high-quality academic journals or presenting at international conferences.
- Experience in designing and conducting physical modelling or experimental studies in environmental fluid mechanics or sediment transport.
- Proficiency in advanced laboratory techniques, including particle image/tracking velocimetry (PIV/PTV), acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV), and optical backscatter measurements.
- Strong data analysis skills using MATLAB or Python for processing and interpreting experimental datasets.
- Proven ability to generate and implement research ideas independently with a systematic approach.
- Experience collaborating in interdisciplinary research projects.
- No nationality restrictions, but PhD completion or near-completion required.
- No age or residency restrictions mentioned.
