PhD in High-Frequency Transformer Design and Partial Discharge Modeling
Develop next-generation power transformers for AI data centers with high-frequency, medium-voltage architectures and predictive PD modeling.
Best for:Best for electrical engineering graduates with expertise in transformer physics, numerical simulation (ANSYS/COMSOL), and high-voltage engineering, seeking a hands-on PhD in sustainable energy technology.
Overview
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) focuses on advancing high-frequency transformer design for AI data centers, aiming to achieve >99.5% efficiency and >10kV operation. The candidate will collaborate with Delta Energy System GmbH to create novel insulation concepts, predictive partial discharge (PD) models, and validate designs using ANSYS Maxwell, COMSOL, and high-voltage testing facilities. The research directly addresses sustainability challenges in AI infrastructure by improving power density and efficiency. The role includes teaching responsibilities and interdisciplinary teamwork with industrial partners.
What you'll do
- Design high-frequency, medium-voltage transformer architectures optimized for >99.5% efficiency and >10kV operation.
- Develop predictive partial discharge (PD) models to simulate and mitigate insulation degradation in transformers.
- Conduct numerical simulations using ANSYS Maxwell and COMSOL to validate transformer designs.
- Perform experimental testing in high-voltage laboratories to validate simulation results.
- Collaborate with industrial partners (Delta Energy System GmbH) to ensure real-world applicability.
- Contribute to teaching tasks (10-15% of time) and mentor students.
- Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.
