Overview

This position at Jagiellonian University’s Malopolska Center of Biotechnology offers a technical role within the ERC-funded ‘IN and OUT’ project. The project investigates how Bacteroides, the dominant gut microbiome genus, efficiently acquires nutrients and expels toxins via outer membrane transporters. The work combines bench-based microbiology with multidisciplinary approaches to explore uncharted biological processes. Ideal candidates should have a strong curiosity for microbial systems, hands-on laboratory experience, and a resilient problem-solving mindset. The role is based in Kraków, Poland, and funded through Horizon Europe’s ERC programme.

What you'll do

  • Conduct experimental work to identify novel outer membrane influx and efflux processes in Bacteroides species.
  • Perform bench-based microbiological techniques, including bacterial culturing, protein purification, and membrane transport assays.
  • Collaborate with project team members to design and execute multidisciplinary experiments combining molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics.
  • Analyze experimental data to uncover new biological insights into why Bacteroides dominates the human gut microbiome.
  • Maintain detailed laboratory records and contribute to project documentation and reporting.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to project progress discussions.
