EPSRC IDLA Studentship in Rotating Detonation Engines
Conduct PhD research on low-order modelling of rotating detonation engines in collaboration with Rolls-Royce at the University of Cambridge.
Best for:Best for engineering, physics, or computer science graduates with a background in fluid mechanics and programming experience in Python or C++.
Overview
Applications are invited for a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge to research low-order models for rotating detonation engines in partnership with Rolls-Royce. The project aims to develop simplified thermodynamic models and validate them using higher-fidelity simulations and experiments. The student will be part of an advanced propulsion initiative, receiving specialized training and engaging directly with industrial specialists. Candidates are expected to translate existing codes, perform simulations, and contribute to academic journals and conferences.
What you'll do
- Develop and refine simplified skeleton models for rotating detonation engines using realistic thermodynamics
- Translate existing thermodynamic and chemical modeling codes into open-source formats
- Implement eigenvalue simulations to determine engine frequency and cycle properties across various operating conditions
- Validate implemented codes against higher-fidelity simulations such as RANS and LES, alongside experimental results
- Extend the simulation framework to incorporate different fuels, geometries, and interfaces with compressors and turbines
- Prepare periodic progress reports and present findings to company specialists at Rolls-Royce
- Attend international conferences and author papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals
- Participate in annual doctoral symposia organized by Rolls-Royce and associated organizations
