4-Year PhD Programme in Genomics and Computational Biology
Fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity featuring multidisciplinary research rotations and a Cambridge degree at the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
Best for:Best for ambitious graduates with a strong background in biology or computation seeking intensive interdisciplinary training in genomics.
Overview
The Wellcome Sanger Institute offers a prestigious four-year PhD programme designed to provide rigorous training across genomics, bioinformatics, and molecular biology. Rather than applying to a specific lab, admitted students undertake three distinct rotation projects during their first eight months, combining both computational and experimental laboratory experiences. This structure ensures broad exposure to cutting-edge technologies and scientific disciplines before selecting a final thesis laboratory by mutual consent. Students receive comprehensive financial support including tuition fees and a tax-free stipend, and upon completion, they are awarded a University of Cambridge PhD degree.
What you'll do
- Complete three rotation projects across different research groups during the first eight months, encompassing both computational and experimental work
- Prepare project reports, posters, and deliver presentations at the conclusion of each rotation
- Attend core training courses covering computational skills, bioinformatics, statistics, presentation, and scientific writing
- Participate actively in regular journal clubs, institute seminars, and research group meetings
- Conduct independent doctoral research under the guidance of a primary supervisor and an academic advisory committee
- Submit a first-year report, a third-year thesis plan, and participate in annual thesis committee review meetings
- Present research findings at internal symposia, student presentation days, and external scientific conferences
- Complete and submit the doctoral thesis within the four-year funding window
