Overview

This fully funded PhD position at the Laboratory PMMH (École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris - PSL) focuses on understanding how plant roots adapt to mechanical stresses in soil. Within the PRISM programme, the project aims to quantify root system development under varying soil conditions, leveraging interdisciplinary approaches combining physics, biology, and engineering. The research will contribute to climate change mitigation by improving carbon sequestration estimates and agricultural yield. The successful candidate will work on experimental model systems, including force sensors and 3D-printed substrates, to study root growth responses to mechanical obstacles. The project is part of broader collaborations with international and intersectoral partners, including industry and research institutions.

What you'll do

  • Develop and conduct experiments to study root growth responses to mechanical obstacles in soil-like environments using force sensors and 3D-printed substrates.
  • Analyze root growth kinematics and mechanical properties under controlled conditions, including varying soil stiffness and obstacle configurations.
  • Design and implement microfluidic systems to simulate granular substrates with tunable stiffness and osmolarity.
  • Collaborate with biologists and theoreticians to integrate biological feedback mechanisms into biophysical models of root development.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary training programs, including courses on sustainability, innovation, and transferable skills.
  • Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Engage in international and intersectoral collaborations with research institutions and industry partners.
