PhD Candidate in Electrodialysis and CO₂ Reduction
Join a Horizon Europe-funded project to develop sustainable electrochemical CO₂ conversion into industrial-grade formate derivatives.
Best for:Best for recent master’s graduates in chemical engineering, electrochemistry, or materials science with hands-on experimental experience in electrochemical devices and a keen interest in sustainable energy technologies.
Overview
This PhD position at NTNU’s Department of Energy and Process Engineering focuses on advancing electrochemical CO₂ reduction to produce formate and formic acid for industrial applications. The successful candidate will conduct experimental, theoretical, and numerical research within a collaborative consortium of 14 European partners, contributing to a carbon-neutral future. The project integrates laboratory work with an industrial pilot campaign at Herøya Industry Park, Norway. Applicants should have a strong background in chemical engineering, electrochemistry, or related fields, with demonstrated experimental skills and a passion for sustainable energy solutions. The position offers a dynamic, international research environment and access to NTNU’s doctoral programme.
What you'll do
- Complete doctoral education to obtain a PhD in Engineering Science, focusing on electrochemical CO₂ reduction.
- Conduct high-quality experimental and theoretical research on producing industrial-grade formate derivatives from CO₂ capture solutions.
- Lead or contribute to academic publications and popular science dissemination on project findings.
- Engage in international research activities, including conferences and research stays abroad.
- Supervise master’s or bachelor’s thesis projects related to the research focus.
- Collaborate with industry partners to integrate laboratory findings into an industrial pilot campaign.
- Analyze data, assess research perspectives, and adapt project plans as needed.
