Research Associate in Steel Structures and Sustainable Design
Lead an industrial research project to develop lightweight, sustainable cold-formed steel systems and design tools for construction applications.
Best for:Best for structural engineers with expertise in finite element modelling, experimental testing, and computational optimization, seeking to bridge academic research and industrial innovation in sustainable construction.
Overview
This Research Associate position at the University of Sheffield focuses on advancing steel structures through a 27-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Hadley Group. The role involves combining experimental testing with advanced computational modelling to optimize cold-formed steel profiles, aiming for 15–20% weight reductions while improving material efficiency. The successful candidate will develop and validate nonlinear finite element models using ABAQUS, conduct manufacturing-aware optimizations, and integrate AI-driven design methodologies. The position offers substantial ownership of a high-impact project, structured professional development, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams at both the university and Hadley Group’s facilities.
What you'll do
- Develop and validate advanced ABAQUS models for cold-formed steel structures, incorporating nonlinear behaviour and manufacturing constraints.
- Conduct full-scale structural testing to validate computational models and optimize steel profiles for purlin, cladding, and mezzanine applications.
- Apply AI-informed modelling techniques to enhance design methodologies and software workflows for industrial adoption.
- Lead day-to-day project activities, including collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and software teams at Hadley Group.
- Translate research findings into practical design tools and methodologies that can be embedded within Hadley Group’s operations.
- Engage in structured professional development, including training in project management, leadership, and business skills.
- Support the transfer of new knowledge and technologies into Hadley Group’s business processes.
