Research Associate in Bioelectrochemical Nitrate Removal
Develop and optimize bioelectrochemical processes for nitrate removal from groundwater in a cutting-edge research project.
Best for:Best for engineers or scientists with a Master’s degree in process engineering, chemical engineering, or related fields, with strong laboratory skills and experience in experimental design and optimization.
Overview
This position at the DVGW Research Centre at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) focuses on advancing bioelectrochemical technology for nitrate removal from groundwater. The project, ELEGANT 2.0, aims to design and optimize laboratory reactors, select electrode materials, and scale up the process for potential drinking water treatment applications. The successful candidate will conduct experiments, collaborate with project partners, and contribute to scientific publications. This role is ideal for engineers or scientists with expertise in process engineering and microbiology, seeking to apply their skills to environmental solutions.
What you'll do
- Set up and operate bioelectrochemical laboratory reactors for nitrate reduction using electrified dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (eDNRA)
- Design and optimize reactor experiments using statistical methods such as Response Surface Methodology (RSM)
- Coordinate scientific and organizational communication with project partners
- Scale up the system and evaluate its suitability for drinking water treatment applications
- Supervise student projects, including Bachelor’s, research, and Master’s theses
- Analyze, document, and present project results in both German and English
- Publish research findings in English-language scientific journals
Requirements
Degree required: Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field
Language: German; Excellent proficiency
Instruction: German and English
- Experience with laboratory reactor setups and bioelectrochemical processes
- Proficiency in experimental design and statistical optimization methods (e.g., Response Surface Methodology)
- Knowledge of microbiological processes and their application in environmental engineering
- Strong analytical and documentation skills for research results
- Ability to supervise and mentor student projects
- No specific nationality or residency restrictions mentioned
- No age or prior experience caps mentioned
