PhD in Architecture, Dynamics, and Regulation of the Bacterial LPS HoloTranslocon
Explore the structural and functional mechanisms of bacterial LPS translocation in a multidisciplinary PhD project co-supervised in France and the UK.
Best for:Best for candidates with a master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, or related fields, seeking to contribute to fundamental research on bacterial membrane transport mechanisms.
Overview
This PhD opportunity focuses on investigating the architecture, dynamics, and regulation of the bacterial LPS (lipopolysaccharide) holo-translocon—a critical protein complex involved in bacterial membrane transport. The project is hosted by the Centre for Integrative Biology (CBI) in Toulouse, France, affiliated with CNRS and the University of Toulouse, and co-supervised by Raffaele Ieva (CBI, France) and Phillip Stansfeld (Warwick University, UK). The doctoral researcher will employ multidisciplinary approaches, including structural biology, biophysics, and molecular biology, to unravel the mechanisms underlying LPS translocation. The project includes research periods at Warwick University, tailored to scientific needs. This position is part of the Horizon Europe COFUND BEST Doctoral Programme, offering a fully funded PhD opportunity for candidates with a strong background in biological sciences.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research to elucidate the architecture, dynamics, and regulation of the bacterial LPS holo-translocon using advanced structural biology techniques.
- Perform biophysical and biochemical assays to characterize protein complex interactions and functional mechanisms.
- Develop and validate molecular models of LPS translocation pathways based on experimental data.
- Collaborate with international partners at Warwick University to integrate findings and conduct comparative analyses.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to the broader research goals of the CBI and BEST Doctoral Programme, including multidisciplinary training and knowledge dissemination.
