Overview

This collaborative PhD project between AMOLF and Utrecht University investigates how continuous phase transitions in materials can be harnessed to reduce optical energy consumption in information processing. The researcher will characterize spectral and temporal responses, evaluate performance near criticality, and combine experiments with theoretical modelling and numerical simulations. Based primarily at AMOLF within the Interacting Photons group and partly at Utrecht University, the candidate will engage in experimental optics, materials characterization, and potential nanofabrication. The successful applicant will receive a full-time four-year contract leading to a PhD degree from a Dutch university.

What you'll do

  • Characterize the spectral and temporal response of laser-driven optical cavities containing perovskite crystals near phase transitions.
  • Design and execute optical experiments using controlled time-dependent signals and benchmark information-processing operations.
  • Combine experimental work with theoretical modelling, statistical data analysis, and numerical simulations.
  • Perform optical cavity measurements, materials characterization, and nanofabrication where necessary.
  • Collaborate between AMOLF and Utrecht University, bridging two research groups and participating in teaching and training programs.
