Research Fellow, Carbon Mineralization
Drive innovative net-zero research by combining pilot-plant experimentation and geochemical modelling for carbon mineralization.
Best for:Best for researchers with a PhD in hydrogeochemistry, chemical engineering, or industrial chemistry and experience in experimental carbon mineralization or pilot plant operations.
Overview
The University of Melbourne's School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a full-time Research Fellow to drive experimental and modelling research advancing ex situ carbon mineralization technologies. Appointed for an 18-month fixed term within the Faculty of Science, the successful candidate will operate and optimize a pioneering DAC-MIN pilot plant to support Australia's transition to net zero. Responsibilities include designing laboratory experiments, conducting geochemical modeling, publishing high-impact research, and mentoring graduate students. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline and bring proven expertise in fluid-rock reactions or carbon mineralization.
What you'll do
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments and geochemical modeling to advance ex situ carbon mineralization processes.
- Develop and refine methods for cation leaching, impurity removal, and carbonate precipitation from industrial waste materials.
- Operate, monitor, and optimize the carbon mineralization pilot plant to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable performance.
- Publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at academic conferences, and contribute to funding proposals and industry partnerships.
- Co-supervise and mentor graduate and PhD students while supporting an inclusive research culture.
