Predoctoral Fellow on Compound Exposures and Health Early Warning Systems
Join ISGlobal as a predoctoral fellow studying the synergistic health impacts of climate extremes and air pollution.
Best for:Best for aspiring environmental epidemiologists and data scientists with strong R programming skills interested in climate-health impacts.
Overview
The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is seeking a talented predoctoral researcher to investigate environmental epidemiology, atmospheric forecasting, and impact-based health early warning systems. Working within the research team of Dr. Joan Ballester Claramunt, the successful candidate will contribute to the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action CLIMES and the ERC Grant EARLY-ADAPT. The role involves analyzing massive multi-hazard databases covering mortality, weather, and socioeconomic variables across European and global scales. The fellow will build epidemiological models, evaluate forecast skill, and help design operational tools for public health agencies. This 36-month position offers an interdisciplinary collaborative environment with international secondments and specialized training network events.
What you'll do
- Apply epidemiological models to assess the synergistic health risks of compound environmental exposures such as temperature, humidity, and pollutants.
- Investigate synoptic atmospheric conditions and weather variability patterns that drive compound climate and pollution episodes.
- Translate operational meteorological and air pollution forecasts into actionable public health predictions.
- Evaluate and compare forecast performance between environmental forecasts and health outcomes.
- Develop operational, impact-based early warning systems to protect vulnerable populations from extreme compound episodes.
