Overview

The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE) is offering a 4 to 6-month internship focused on numerical modelling of river hydrodynamics and water temperature. Working within the Riverly unit in Villeurbanne, France, the intern will develop and calibrate a one-dimensional model of the River Saône using platforms such as Pamhyr2 and the Mage hydraulic solver. The project aims to improve predictions of river temperature dynamics by incorporating hydraulic structures and groundwater exchanges, comparing results with the existing T-NET model. The ideal candidate is a proactive student in hydraulics or physical geography with strong numerical modeling interests.

What you'll do

  • Build a comprehensive 1D hydraulic model of the River Saône using the Pamhyr2 platform, covering the area from its confluence down to Lyon.
  • Calibrate and validate the Mage hydraulic solver to accurately simulate flow dynamics from low-water conditions to flood events.
  • Apply the AdisTT temperature-transport module to simulate thermal propagation along the river.
  • Compare and discuss simulation results against outputs from the T-NET software model.
  • Analyze the impact of river dams and potential river-groundwater exchanges on local hydrodynamics and water temperatures.
