PhD Position in Living Physics: Mechanics of Cellular Monolayers
Investigate the physical mechanisms of cellular monolayers using an innovative microfluidic micro-stretcher device.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics, biophysics, or soft matter with a strong interest in experimental interdisciplinary life sciences.
Overview
The Institut Lumière Matière offers a fully funded PhD position focusing on the role of cellular activity and anisotropy in the mechanics of biological monolayers. Working within a vibrant biophysics team, the successful candidate will conduct long-term rheological assays on curved epithelial and endothelial cell monolayers using advanced microfluidic devices. The project involves close collaboration, daily supervision, and hands-on training in state-of-the-art experimental techniques at the interface of physics and biology. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong experimental dedication, curiosity for living systems, and a background in physics or related disciplines.
What you'll do
- Cultivate cellular monolayers inside hydrogel microchannels and operate the custom micro-stretcher device
- Modulate the initial nematic order of biological tissues under controlled mechanical tension
- Perform real-time image acquisitions to quantify channel lumen deformation, cell shape, and actin orientation fields
- Investigate the biological origins of mechanical tissue response utilizing pharmacological inhibitors and immunostaining
