Doctoral Position in Functional Oxide Thin Films
Fully funded 4-year PhD position investigating functional oxide thin films using advanced synthesis, characterization, and machine learning at ETH Zurich.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics, chemistry, or materials science with a strong interest in thin-film synthesis, solid-state materials, and experimental characterization.
Overview
The newly established Solid-State Materials Chemistry Group at ETH Zurich invites applications for a 4-year fully funded doctoral position focusing on layered perovskite-based oxides. The successful candidate will investigate how crystal chemistry and dimensionality can be tailored to couple magnetic, electric, and structural properties for advanced electronic applications. The work involves growing epitaxial thin films, structural and functional characterization, device fabrication, and applying first-principles calculations and machine learning. Candidates will work in an international, collaborative team and contribute to establishing a brand-new laboratory.
What you'll do
- Grow epitaxial thin films and heterostructures using pulsed-laser deposition and magnetron sputtering.
- Perform structural and functional characterization via X-ray diffraction, scanning-probe microscopy, and magnetometry.
- Fabricate thin-film devices in a cleanroom environment and conduct electrical transport measurements.
- Utilize first-principles calculations and machine-learning foundation models to identify promising metastable compositions.
- Present research findings at international scientific conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
