PhD Position in Environmental Epidemiology
Investigate climate-related exposures and their effects on maternal and child health using advanced epidemiological methods.
Best for:Best for epidemiologists, biostatisticians, or quantitative researchers with a strong background in environmental health and advanced statistical modeling.
Overview
This PhD position at Karolinska Institutet’s Institute of Environmental Medicine focuses on understanding how climate change impacts maternal and early-life health. The doctoral student will explore the combined and interactive effects of extreme temperatures and air pollution during pregnancy on maternal complications and child development. Using large-scale register data from Sweden and Belgium, the project will apply advanced statistical methods, including time-to-event analyses and distributed lag models. The successful candidate will contribute to developing evidence-based prevention strategies in a changing climate while gaining expertise in environmental epidemiology, data management, and scientific communication. The position offers collaboration with international partners and opportunities for research stays abroad.
What you'll do
- Conduct research on the independent and interactive effects of heat, cold, and air pollution during pregnancy on maternal complications and child development.
- Apply advanced epidemiological and statistical methods, including time-to-event analyses, case-crossover designs, and distributed lag models.
- Manage and analyze large-scale administrative and clinical register data from Sweden and Belgium, combined with high-resolution environmental exposure data.
- Develop expertise in exposure assessment, epidemiological study design, and advanced statistical modeling.
- Publish findings in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
- Participate in doctoral courses, seminars, and journal clubs to enhance research and communication skills.
- Collaborate with international research partners, including opportunities for research stays abroad.
