Overview

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is offering a fully funded PhD position in cellular neuroscience focusing on molecular mechanisms of synaptic mRNA capture and translation. The project investigates how neurons supply protein complexes to build synapses with spatiotemporal precision using rodent and human iPSC-derived neuron models. The successful candidate will develop genetic and imaging tools, perform live-cell and super-resolution microscopy, and participate in international research networks. The role also includes a ten percent teaching component involving student supervision and scientific dissemination.

What you'll do

  • Perform imaging of mRNA, translation, and receptors at synaptic sites in cultured rodent and human iPSC-derived neurons.
  • Investigate and control the dynamics of mRNAs and ribosomes by developing novel genetic and imaging tools.
  • Execute live-cell and super-resolution imaging assays.
  • Conduct functional assays to study synapse formation and function.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and deliver progress reports to funding agencies.
  • Contribute approximately 10% of time to teaching activities, including the supervision of bachelor and master student interns.
  • Present research findings to the international scientific community.
