PhD Stipends in Pure and Applied Mathematics
Explore advanced research in algebra, geometry, quantum theory, and mathematical physics at Denmark’s leading mathematics department.
Best for:Best for mathematicians with a master’s degree (or bachelor’s for the integrated programme) seeking to specialize in pure or applied mathematics, quantum theory, or geometric analysis in a world-class research institution.
Overview
The University of Copenhagen’s Department of Mathematical Sciences invites applicants for PhD stipends across a broad spectrum of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, quantum information, functional analysis, and geometric topology. This position offers a dynamic research environment with access to specialized centers like the Copenhagen Center for Geometry & Topology (GeoTop) and the Centre for the Mathematics of Quantum Theory. Successful candidates will conduct independent research under expert supervision, complete PhD courses, and contribute to teaching and knowledge dissemination. The program supports both the standard 3-year PhD track and an integrated 3+5-year MSc+PhD pathway for applicants without a master’s degree.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent research under expert supervision in a specialized area of mathematics (e.g., algebraic geometry, quantum information, or functional analysis).
- Complete PhD courses totaling approximately 30 ECTS credits (½ full-time equivalent).
- Participate in active research environments, including an international research stay (preferably abroad).
- Engage in teaching and knowledge dissemination activities, such as lectures or workshops.
- Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals and defend a PhD thesis based on your research project.
- Collaborate with international research groups and contribute to departmental seminars and conferences.
