PhD Studentship: Heterogeneous Quantum-Dot–Atom Repeaters for Quantum Networks
Develop next-generation quantum repeaters combining quantum dots and atomic memories for scalable quantum communication networks.
Best for:Best for physics or engineering graduates with a strong interest in quantum optics, semiconductor physics, and experimental quantum technologies, seeking hands-on research experience in quantum communication and quantum repeaters.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at the University of Manchester focuses on advancing quantum communication by designing and building hybrid quantum repeaters. The project aims to integrate deterministic III-V quantum-dot sources with room-temperature alkali-vapour memories to overcome photon loss in optical fibres. The successful candidate will work on developing interfaces for frequency conversion and photon storage, characterising quantum-optical systems, and contributing to scalable quantum network components. The research bridges theoretical modelling, experimental quantum optics, and applied quantum telecommunications, with opportunities for collaboration across the UK, Europe, and the US. The project is part of a broader initiative to test quantum telecommunication technologies in real-world metro networks.
What you'll do
- Develop and characterise hybrid quantum-dot–rubidium interfaces for frequency conversion and photon storage.
- Conduct experiments in cryogenic quantum-dot optics and atomic-vapour systems using quantum-optical methods.
- Design and build optical setups for quantum experiments, including nanophotonic components.
- Perform theoretical modelling and simulations of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and four-wave mixing.
- Collaborate with international partners to integrate quantum repeaters into real-world quantum network trials.
- Contribute to the development of scalable components for quantum networks and sensing applications.
