PhD Position in Ultrafast Dynamics of Photoswitches
Explore ultrafast molecular dynamics and photoelectron spectroscopy in liquids for novel biomimetic chromophores.
Best for:Best for PhD candidates with expertise in ultrafast spectroscopy, femtosecond laser physics, and molecular dynamics seeking to contribute to cutting-edge photochemistry research.
Overview
This PhD position at the Max-Born Institute in Berlin focuses on the ultrafast dynamics of photoswitches within the joint German-French project ‘FEMTO-switch.’ The project aims to understand how chemical structure influences molecular energetics and excited-state dynamics at conical intersections. The successful candidate will develop time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) in liquid phase, using femtosecond UV/XUV pulses, to investigate oxindole-based and oxopyrrole-based chromophores. The work combines experimental spectroscopy with quantum chemistry calculations, targeting improved sensitivity and stability of TRPES for low-solubility samples. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong background in ultrafast laser physics and molecular dynamics.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) in liquid phase using femtosecond UV/XUV pulses.
- Investigate oxindole-based and oxopyrrole-based chromophores to study their ultrafast dynamics and molecular energetics.
- Improve sensitivity and stability of TRPES for low-solubility samples in various solvents.
- Collaborate with project partners to conduct experimental and theoretical investigations of oxindole switches.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data using quantum chemistry calculations.
- Document experimental protocols and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
