PhD Student on Operando TEM Analysis of Ionotronic Materials
Develop free-standing 2D oxide membranes and investigate functional materials using advanced in situ transmission electron microscopy.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics, chemistry, or materials science with a strong interest in electron microscopy and condensed matter physics.
Overview
This PhD position offers an exciting opportunity to research the growth and characterization of two-dimensional free-standing functional oxides using advanced in situ transmission electron microscopy. The project is a collaborative effort hosted at Forschungszentrum Jülich's Ernst Ruska-Centre and PGI-7, in partnership with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The successful candidate will investigate epitaxial growth, atomic structures, and topotactic phase transitions under external stimuli. The candidate will be enrolled in a doctoral program at RWTH Aachen and engage in a comprehensive pedagogical training plan.
What you'll do
- Design and develop stable, electron-transparent crystalline platforms for advanced in situ transmission electron microscopy.
- Investigate in situ epitaxial growth, oxygen-vacancy ordering, and topotactic phase transitions in complex oxide thin films.
- Utilize state-of-the-art electron microscopy, electron holography, and electrical biasing to study atomic-scale phenomena.
- Analyze the interplay between crystal growth, ionic transport, and local magnetic properties in real time.
- Participate in a structured pedagogical training program and complete a secondment at an international partner institution.
