PhD Studentship - Cracking the Ribosome Code of Brain Development
Investigate how ribosomes influence brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders using animal models.
Best for:Best for biology or neuroscience graduates with a strong interest in developmental biology, structural imaging, and animal models.
Overview
The University of Exeter invites applications for a fully-funded four-year PhD studentship as part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme. The project investigates the active role of ribosomes and protein synthesis in generating diverse neurons during brain development. Using zebrafish and mouse models, the selected candidate will combine developmental neuroscience with structural biology imaging to uncover fundamental mechanisms of brain circuitry and neurodevelopmental disorders. The researcher will be embedded in the Centre for Ecology and Conservation and will receive structured research training and financial support.
What you'll do
- Design and execute experimental studies examining ribosome variations in progenitor cells and newly born neurons.
- Utilize zebrafish and mouse models to track cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain circuit formation.
- Perform structural biology imaging and data analysis to characterize protein synthesis processes.
- Collaborate within the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme consortium and participate in cohort training activities.
- Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at scientific conferences.
