Doctoral Position in Theoretical Modeling of Nanocrystal Growth
Develop universal theoretical and computational models to understand and control semiconductor nanocrystal growth.
Best for:Best for candidates with a strong background in computational materials science, physical chemistry, or physics, and an interest in nanoscale modeling.
Overview
The Optical Materials Engineering Laboratory at ETH Zurich offers a fully funded doctoral position focused on the theoretical and computational modeling of semiconductor nanocrystal nucleation and growth. The successful candidate will combine density functional theory, mass-balance rate equations, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate how nanoplatelets, magic-sized nanocrystals, and quantum dots emerge. Working closely with experimentalists, the researcher will use high-performance computing infrastructure to guide the design of new synthesis protocols. Applicants should hold a relevant master's degree and possess a strong foundation in thermodynamics, kinetics, or computational modeling.
What you'll do
- Develop theoretical and computational models for the nucleation and growth of semiconductor nanocrystals.
- Perform density functional theory calculations to determine surface and edge energies of surfactant-terminated nanocrystals.
- Construct mass-balance rate equation models to examine competitive growth and dissolution of nanocrystal populations.
- Conduct kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate early-stage crystallite development and morphology selection.
- Collaborate closely with experimental researchers to align simulation parameters with synthesis and stability measurements.
- Contribute to general laboratory activities, assist with teaching duties, and supervise bachelor and master students.
