PhD Studentship: Exploring How Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Uses Nutrients
Investigate nutrient utilisation and pathogen biology in Mycobacterium tuberculosis through an interdisciplinary PhD project.
Best for:Best for aspiring microbiologists and biochemists with a strong interest in infectious disease research and pathogen metabolism.
Overview
This fully funded 3.5-year PhD project at the University of Manchester investigates how Mycobacterium tuberculosis utilises nutrients and how disruptions in nutrient transport alter pathogen biology. Based within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and the Michael Smith building, the successful candidate will combine microbiology, biochemical, and analytical approaches to address this critical global health challenge. The student will receive multidisciplinary training and work in a collaborative research environment with access to world-class facilities. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant undergraduate degree and demonstrate a strong interest in pathogen biochemistry.
What you'll do
- Conduct laboratory research investigating how Mycobacterium tuberculosis utilises various nutrients during infection.
- Combine microbiological, genetic, biochemical, and analytical techniques to evaluate pathogen survival mechanisms.
- Examine how disruptions in nutrient transport systems alter overall pathogen biology and adaptation.
- Collaborate with researchers within the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and maintain rigorous laboratory records.
- Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and group meetings based on research findings.
Requirements
Degree required: 2.1 UK honours degree in a relevant subject, with a master's level qualification at merit or distinction (or international equivalent) ideally preferred.
