Best for:Best for students passionate about cultural analysis, ethnographic research, and interdisciplinary social sciences who seek hands-on fieldwork experience and a globally recognised degree.
Overview
This two-year Master’s programme at the University of Oslo’s Department of Social Anthropology immerses students in cutting-edge research on contemporary social issues such as climate change, conflict, and global political economy. Through long-term ethnographic fieldwork—either domestically or abroad—students design their own research projects, conduct original data collection, and produce a thesis that bridges academic theory with real-world application. The programme offers two specialisations: Contemporary Ethnography (focusing on social phenomena like activism and sustainability) and Global Political Economy (exploring capital, finance, and labour). Graduates develop expertise in cross-cultural analysis, communication, and problem-solving, preparing them for diverse careers in academia, policy, NGOs, and private sectors.
