Doctoral Researcher in Tree Breeding and Molecular Genetics
Investigate the evolutionary and molecular background of early developmental mortality in Scots pine seeds.
Best for:Best for biology and forestry graduates with an interest in evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, and plant reproduction.
Overview
The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the University of Helsinki are seeking a Doctoral Researcher for a joint project examining the reproductive system of Scots pine. The research focuses on understanding inbreeding depression, self-incompatibility, and embryo mortality using advanced techniques such as spatial transcriptomics. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory and field work while pursuing a PhD through the University of Helsinki's doctoral programme. This position requires regular on-site presence, strong teamwork, and active participation in scientific sampling.
What you'll do
- Carry out doctoral research in accordance with the project's established research plan.
- Investigate inbreeding depression and self-incompatibility mechanisms affecting seed embryo viability.
- Apply spatial transcriptomics and other advanced methods to analyze gene expression in seeds.
- Compare natural embryo development with somatic embryogenesis processes.
- Participate in field measurements, trials, and sample collection at designated field stations.
- Perform laboratory analyses in molecular biology, microscopy, and plant tissue culture.
- Collaborate closely with research teams across Luke and the University of Helsinki.
