PhD Position in Multi-Scale Modelling and Experimental Assessment of Volumetrically Prestressed Concrete
Fully funded PhD opportunity to develop innovative concrete solutions for sustainable infrastructure repair and strengthening.
Best for:Best for structural engineers with expertise in nonlinear finite element modelling, concrete structures, and a strong interest in 3D concrete printing and smart materials.
Overview
This PhD position is part of the EU Horizon-funded SURPASS project, aiming to create adaptive strengthening and repair systems for ageing infrastructure. The successful candidate will conduct multi-scale modelling and experimental assessments of volumetrically prestressed concrete overlays, combining finite element simulations with large-scale testing. The work will focus on integrating shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) fibres into 3D-printable and cast concrete systems for applications like tunnel linings and curved bridge structures. The position is based at Empa in Dübendorf, Switzerland, with supervision from ETH Zurich and industry partners. The candidate will contribute to developing sustainable, circular, and cost-effective solutions for structural repair and maintenance.
What you'll do
- Develop multi-scale finite element models to simulate volumetric prestressing mechanisms using Fe-SMA fibres, including activation, stress recovery, and prestress transfer.
- Conduct parametric finite element analyses to develop surrogate models and support digital twin applications for SURPASS overlays.
- Perform large-scale experimental assessments of volumetrically prestressed concrete overlays for non-planar structures like tunnel linings and curved bridge soffits.
- Collaborate with project partners to integrate eco-efficient UHPFRC, bio-based self-healing, and hybrid fibre architectures into the SURPASS system.
- Support the development of circular end-of-life strategies for fibre recovery and upcycling of construction materials.
- Present research findings at international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
