PhD Positions in Thermochronology and Isotope Geoscience
Explore fundamental questions in thermochronology with fieldwork in Sweden and Canada at the University of Geneva.
Best for:Best for Earth Science or Physics graduates with a strong quantitative background, laboratory skills, and an interest in fieldwork and isotopic geochemistry.
Overview
This PhD opportunity at the University of Geneva focuses on advancing thermochronology by investigating key assumptions behind isotopic dating methods such as Ar/Ar, Sm/Nd, U/Pb, and Lu/Hf. The projects integrate in-situ geochronological measurements with mineral characterization to understand mechanisms of isotope redistribution in single crystals. Fieldwork will take place in northern Sweden and Canada, regions with well-documented geological histories. The positions are fully funded for four years by the Swiss National Science Foundation, offering access to state-of-the-art analytical facilities at the University of Geneva and complementary labs in Lausanne.
What you'll do
- Conduct in-situ geochronological measurements using advanced isotopic dating techniques (Ar/Ar, Sm/Nd, U/Pb, Lu/Hf).
- Characterize minerals (texture, composition, structure) to analyze mechanisms of isotope redistribution within single crystals.
- Participate in fieldwork in northern Sweden and Canada to test thermochronological assumptions in well-documented geological regions.
- Collaborate with analytical facilities at the University of Geneva and complementary labs at the University of Lausanne.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals and present results at international conferences.
- Contribute to the development of new methodologies in thermochronology and isotope geochemistry.
