Doctoral Researcher in Steel-Timber Composite Structures
Innovative PhD position to advance sustainable hybrid structural systems combining steel and cross-laminated timber.
Best for:Best for civil/structural or mechanical engineering graduates with expertise in composite materials, structural dynamics, and finite element modeling, seeking a research-focused PhD in sustainable construction.
Overview
This doctoral position at the University of Luxembourg focuses on the structural behavior and performance of Steel-Timber Composite (STC) beams, a cutting-edge hybrid system merging steel and cross-laminated timber (CLT). The successful candidate will conduct research under the guidance of Prof. Christoph Odenbreit within the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction, contributing to both experimental and numerical studies. The project aims to develop design methodologies and engineering solutions for sustainable construction, with opportunities to engage in European standardization activities. The role involves a blend of laboratory work, computational modeling, and analytical approaches, while also contributing to teaching and academic collaboration.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental research on Steel-Timber Composite (STC) beams to analyze mechanical behavior and performance under various conditions.
- Develop and apply finite element models (e.g., ABAQUS) to simulate and predict structural responses.
- Design and execute analytical approaches to support the development of reliable design methodologies for STC systems.
- Collaborate with industry and standardization bodies (e.g., ECCS, CEN) to contribute to future design standards.
- Contribute to teaching and academic activities within the university’s Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
