Research Fellow in Pharmacology
Join an HFSP-funded project investigating the evolutionary origins of sensory receptors and ion channels.
Best for:Best for researchers with a background in molecular pharmacology, ion channel characterization, and an interest in evolutionary biology.
Overview
The University of Southampton is seeking a motivated Research Fellow to join an interdisciplinary project funded by the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). This role focuses on the evolutionary origins and functional characterization of sensory receptors, specifically Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels in non-bilaterian animals and choanoflagellates. The successful candidate will integrate molecular pharmacology with evolutionary biology, utilizing techniques such as molecular cloning, heterologous expression, and pharmacological assays. You will work within the School of Biological Sciences and collaborate with international partners, including a laboratory in France. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to fundamental questions regarding the evolution of animal sensation.
What you'll do
- Perform molecular cloning and construct preparation for candidate sensory receptors.
- Express candidate proteins in mammalian cell systems for functional characterization.
- Develop and optimize functional assays for medium- to high-throughput pharmacological screening.
- Conduct concentration-response experiments and quantitative data analysis to determine pharmacological properties.
- Collaborate with international partners on sensory-driven behavior and channel function research.
- Maintain accurate experimental records and ensure research reproducibility.
- Communicate research findings through publications and conference presentations.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, physiology, or evolutionary biology.
Language: English (professional proficiency).
Instruction: English
- Expertise in molecular biology, cloning, and construct preparation.
- Experience with heterologous expression systems.
- Proficiency in quantitative experimental data analysis and statistical methods.
- Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
- Must hold or be near completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline.
