PhD Studentship in Geotechnical Engineering
Explore nature-based and biomimetic foundation systems to advance sustainable geotechnical engineering.
Best for:Best for engineering, applied mathematics, or physics graduates with an interest in geotechnical mechanics and numerical modeling.
Overview
The University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science offers a 3.5-year D.Phil. studentship focusing on nature-based and biomimetic foundation systems. Supervised by Professor Jonathan Knappett and Professor Chris Martin, the project examines tree root architecture under complex loading to design efficient, low-carbon geotechnical solutions. The selected candidate will combine advanced numerical modeling with physical scale testing to understand root-soil interaction mechanisms. The role provides full coverage of course fees and a competitive tax-free maintenance stipend.
What you'll do
- Investigate the behavioral responses of tree root architectures under combined vertical, horizontal, and moment loading.
- Develop and apply numerical modeling approaches to simulate complex root-soil interactions efficiently.
- Conduct physical model experiments to determine key root-soil interaction parameters.
- Design and evaluate scalable biomimetic foundation concepts optimized for low embodied carbon and minimal installation requirements.
- Collaborate with project supervisors and disseminate research findings through academic reports and publications.
