Research Fellow in Quantum Technology
Join a 12-month postdoctoral project at the University of Sussex to build a distributed quantum network using trapped ions and photons.
Best for:Best for experimental physicists with a PhD in quantum information or atomic physics and hands-on experience with complex optical and ultra-high vacuum systems.
Overview
The University of Sussex invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral Research Fellow position within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Working under the supervision of Professor Matthias Keller, the successful candidate will contribute to the EPSRC Quantum Technology Hub by combining trapped ions and photons to develop a distributed quantum network. The role focuses on testing and characterising multi-zone ion trap systems, implementing efficient ion-photon interfaces, and simulating novel quantum entanglement schemes. Candidates are expected to conduct rigorous experimental research within a collaborative academic environment.
What you'll do
- Test and characterise multi-zone ion trap systems for loading and quantum information processing.
- Implement and optimise a cavity-based, highly efficient ion-photon interface.
- Simulate and execute novel experimental schemes for achieving ion-photon entanglement.
- Operate and maintain complex optical systems involving diode lasers and control electronics.
- Manage ultra-high vacuum systems integral to the quantum experiment.
- Collaborate with an experienced research team to establish a basic distributed quantum network.
