Research Fellow in Computational Semantics
Explore novel algebraic structures for computational effects in formal language theory and semantics.
Best for:Best for theoretical computer scientists with expertise in category theory, denotational semantics, or formal language theory seeking a research-focused role in advanced mathematical computing.
Overview
This Research Fellow position at the University of Birmingham’s School of Computer Science focuses on advancing categorical and denotational semantics for general computational effects, particularly stateful effects and polymorphism. The successful candidate will contribute to the project *‘New algebraic structures for computational effects’* led by Dr Paul Levy, developing theoretical models and techniques while collaborating on research bids, publications, and knowledge dissemination. The role involves independent research, mentorship of PhD students, and engagement with broader academic and commercial communities. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in formal methods, category theory, or related areas, with a passion for theoretical computer science and its applications.
What you'll do
- Develop and refine research objectives for independent and collaborative projects within the field of computational semantics, under guidance when needed.
- Contribute to writing proposals for research funding bids, ensuring alignment with project goals and academic standards.
- Analyze and interpret complex research data to derive new theoretical insights and mathematical models.
- Publish research findings in academic journals, conference proceedings, and seminars, ensuring rigorous peer review standards.
- Supervise and mentor PhD students, providing academic guidance and support for their research-related work.
- Develop novel models, techniques, and methods for formal language theory and semantics, with a focus on algebraic structures.
- Engage in enterprise and business development activities, including licensing deals, IP generation, and public outreach.
- Collect and manage research data through experimentation, literature reviews, and interviews, ensuring methodological rigor.
- Present research outputs at academic conferences, seminars, and workshops, including drafting academic publications.
- Support staff and students involved in research projects, troubleshooting challenges and ensuring project timelines are met.
