Doctoral Position in Semiconductor Nanocrystal Characterization
Investigate atomic-scale properties of semiconductor nanocrystals using advanced optical spectroscopy and electron microscopy.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics, chemistry, or materials science with a strong interest in nanoscale characterization and spectroscopy.
Overview
This doctoral position is offered by the Optical Materials Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between size, shape, surface chemistry, and optical performance of semiconductor nanocrystals, focusing initially on magic-sized CdSe particles. Using advanced single-particle spectroscopy and cryogenic electron microscopy, the researcher will uncover hidden variations in nanocrystal properties. The role involves close collaboration with synthesis and modeling teams, contributing to laboratory activities, and participating in teaching and student supervision.
What you'll do
- Characterize semiconductor nanocrystals using complementary optical and structural techniques.
- Perform ensemble and single-particle spectroscopy to measure emission linewidths and excited-state dynamics.
- Utilize cryogenic electron microscopy and single-particle analysis for three-dimensional structural determination.
- Collaborate with researchers responsible for nanocrystal synthesis and theoretical modeling to guide material optimization.
- Contribute to general laboratory operations and assist in maintaining optical and characterization equipment.
- Participate in teaching activities and supervise bachelor's and master's student research projects.
