PhD Studentship: Mapping Antimicrobial Resistance in 3-D
Investigate how fungal pathogens develop antimicrobial resistance using advanced 3-D magnetic resonance imaging.
Best for:Best for curious science graduates from biology, chemistry, physics, or computational backgrounds looking to pursue interdisciplinary microbiological research.
Overview
This 4-year PhD studentship is offered at the University of East Anglia within the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, part of the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership. The project explores the cellular and metabolic responses of Aspergillus fumigatus when exposed to antifungal agents, utilizing cutting-edge three-dimensional magnetic resonance techniques developed in the host lab. The successful candidate will combine microbiology with magnetic resonance physics, working across two research institutes to map chemical resistance profiles within living fungal colonies. Applicants from biology, chemistry, physics, or computational backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with full training provided for specialized methods.
What you'll do
- Conduct microbiological experiments examining the response of fungal pathogens to chemical exposure
- Utilize advanced magnetic resonance techniques to map chemistry in three dimensions inside living fungal material
- Investigate spatial colony responses, cell wall rebuilding, and metabolic rewiring in Aspergillus fumigatus
- Collaborate across two research institutes within the Norwich Research Park
- Contribute to experimental design and help direct the future trajectory of the research project
- Analyze complex multi-dimensional datasets and present research findings
