PhD Position in Digital Twins for Flood-Resilient Infrastructure
Develop advanced digital twins combining machine learning and hydrodynamic simulation to protect critical infrastructure against flooding.
Best for:Best for computational researchers with an MSc in civil engineering or computer science, strong Python skills, and an interest in hydrodynamic modeling and machine learning.
Overview
Delft University of Technology is offering a 4-year PhD position focused on creating innovative digital twins for flood-resilient infrastructure management under the NWO-funded FlooDT project. The successful candidate will build hybrid models that integrate machine learning, multi-model datasets, and hydrodynamic simulations to improve risk assessment and infrastructure protection. Working within the Flood Risk and Hydraulic Structures section, the researcher will collaborate with an international consortium of academic and industrial partners. Responsibilities include developing functional simulation modules, validating real-world case studies, and coordinating stakeholder engagement workshops. The appointment provides robust professional support, structured doctoral training, and a collaborative multi-disciplinary research environment.
What you'll do
- Design and implement functional modules for digital twins covering risk analysis, scenario modelling, and monitoring data processing.
- Develop hybrid modelling approaches that integrate physics-based principles with machine learning techniques for flood risk evaluation.
- Apply and validate digital twin functionalities on simplified structural representations initially, followed by real-world case studies.
- Integrate developed software functionalities into operational platforms used by project end-users.
- Co-organize workshops and coordinate stakeholder engagement activities, including regular progress presentations and partner visits.
